The evidence does not match the slang neatly
Research rarely studies “gooning” as a stable, defined behaviour. The term may combine prolonged masturbation, edging, pornography use, absorption and online subculture. Claims about gooning specifically should therefore be treated cautiously.
Where relevant, this site draws on broader work about compulsive sexual behaviour, sexual health and behaviour change without pretending those categories are identical.
Our evidence hierarchy
We prioritize current diagnostic guidance, systematic or peer-reviewed research, government health services and established professional organizations. A directory may be useful for finding care without proving that every provider listed uses the same framework.
Personal stories and community language can identify real questions, but they are not used as proof of diagnosis or biological damage.
Areas of disagreement
ICD-11 includes compulsive sexual behaviour disorder as an impulse-control disorder. AASECT states that evidence is insufficient to classify sex addiction or pornography addiction as mental-health disorders. These positions are not interchangeable.
This site uses CSBD accurately while acknowledging that clinicians and treatment programs may use different language.
What we will not claim
We do not diagnose readers, set a universal healthy frequency, promise abstinence as the only solution, or use unsupported “dopamine damage” explanations. We update pages when stronger evidence or authoritative guidance changes the picture.
